(2004). Effets de la fréquence du voisinage syllabique dans la reconnaissance des mot écrits et la lecture: Comparisons inter-tâches [Effects of syllable neighborhood frequency in visual word recognition and reading: Cross-task comparisons]. During the process of visual word recognition readers do not identify words as a whole –specially long words–, but rather there are sublexical units that mediate between a word's constituent letters and the lexical level. One of the most important sublexical units is the syllable, especially in Romance languages such as French and Spanish. The syllable has been proposed as one of the most relevant functional units In the next section we review the evidence for syllabic processing, focusing especially on the syllable frequency effect, which is the variable manipulated in the present study. We will then present three experiments; these experiments employed different

Running head: BEYOND SINGLE SYLLABLES
The study assessed the eye movements of 60 adult German readers during silent reading of target words, consisting of 2 and 3 syllables, embedded in sentences. The first objective was to assess whether the inhibitory effect of first syllable frequency, which was up to now primarily shown for isolated words, generalizes to natural reading. The second objective was to assess the effect of orthogra...

We report a study of naming and lexical decision with 132 adult Greek speakers responding to 150 words and matched pseudowords with decorrelated frequency, length, neighborhood, syllable and bigram frequency, and transparency. This approach allowed us to individuate and accurately estimate the effects of each variable, and to assess their linearity and additivity. Significant effects of frequen...

Effects of lexical and sublexical variables on visual word recognition are often treated as homogeneous across participants and stable over time. In this study, we examine the modulation of frequency, length, syllable and bigram frequency, orthographic neighborhood, and graphophonemic consistency effects by (a) individual differences, and (b) item repetition. A group of 129 participants perform...
متن کاملPhonology as the source of syllable frequency effects in visual word recognition: evidence from French.
In order to investigate whether syllable frequency effects in visual word recognition can be attributed to phonologically or orthographically defined syllables, we designed one experiment that allowed six critical comparisons. Whereas only a weak effect was obtained when both orthographic and phonological syllable frequency were conjointly manipulated in Comparison 1, robust effects for phonolo...
متن کاملReplicating syllable frequency effects in Spanish in German: One more challenge to computational models of visual word recognition
Two experiments tested the role of syllable frequency in word recognition, recently suggested in Spanish, in another shallow orthography, German. Like in Spanish, word recognition performance was inhibited in a lexical decision and a perceptual identification task when the first syllable of a word was of high frequency. Given this replication of the inhibitory effect of syllable frequency in a ...
